For many years now Fish Oils have been looked at as the main and superior choice to get Omega 3′s into the diet in order to lower blood pressure, inflammation, and cholesterol among other things. However, it appears by research that Krill oil is emerging to be the new front runner in non-vegetarian omega supplementation.
What is a Krill?
Same question I first asked…
It’s a shrimp like crustacean that lives at the bottom of the ocean and feeds primarily on phytoplankton. Krill fishing mostly occurs in the Northern and Southern Pacific Oceans. Krill contains Omega 3, but what has made it grow in popularity is an antioxidant that it also contains called astaxanthin. It seems that the algae that the Krill eat is the source of this and also is what gives the Krill their red color.
So What is Krill Good For?
Well as with Fish Oil, Krill Oil is used for many inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, mood imbalances such as PMS, and lowering cholesterol. But here is where the Krill oil overtakes the Fish Oil. Krill oil was shown in one study to reduce the symptoms of arthritis and inflammation significantly. In another study, Krill oil has was shown to lower the LDL (or bad cholesterol) where as Fish oil is only been proven to lower triglyceride cholesterol. In addition, the Krill oil has tested superior to the Fish oil in lower triglycerides, and it increases HDL (“the good cholesterol). But that is not the best part. The Krill oil does not have that fishy regurgitation that the Fish Oils do.
So if you are not a vegetarian and if you are not allergic to fish and are not taking any blood thinners, Krill oil may be a good choice for you to lower cholesterol, decrease your pain of arthritis, and/or stabilize your moods from hormonal imbalance.
This can be easily purchased at your local organic health food grocer, or you can order it online at one of my favorite sites www.iherb.com.
