As we once again mark October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are reminded of how far we’ve come and how much work remains to be done. Today, our call for an end to abuse, for a commitment to prevention, and in support of local programs is echoed by the President of the United States. It is our pleasure to forward the proclamation, recently released from President Obama in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each October, we remember the many lives that were cut short by domestic violence during the past year. So they created an easily identifiable, wear-resistant, waterproof bracelet that shows the caretaker’s phone number on it. This way if a grown-up spots a kid who looks lost and sees the bracelet, they would be able to phone the caretaker resolving the situation almost immediately and without too much panic. The bracelet was after the armadillo because this little animal, born wearing a natural suit of armor, is known as a symbol of safety. Matter of fact, the Spanish word armadillo literally translates into “little armored one,” which is exactly how they wanted to see the  children who wear the bracelet, safe from harm.  The bracelet is cool, trendy and unisex so that kids  want to wear it and it also is easy to use and affordable so parents will want to buy it. When all of this initially started (speaking of a public option and such) I had some averse feelings to what appeared to be coming down the pipeline. But in looking at the summary of the new Health Care Bill (let me emphasize, looking at the Summary of the Bill), I’m pleasantly surprised at what I see at first glance. It seems that rather than creating an entirely new government entity (public option), President Obama is focusing heavily on Health Insurance Reform. Some of the changes will begin as early as September of 2010, but most of the major changes will begin in 2014. Here are a few of the highlights of the Bill.
