Other times it is not acknowledging important feelings that allow disease to manifest other ways suck as high blood pressure, migraine headaches, and even cancers of some types. The key is to allow yourself to feel whatever emotion your are feeling, and to have a healthy way to express or release that emotion. There are different theories on how emotions can affect the physical well-being. For example, in Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory there are seven main emotions that affect the “Qi” or life force of the body and specific organs. Anger, for instance, causes the ‘qi’ to flow upwards (in the wrong directions) which can manifest as dizziness, headaches, and even syncope (passing out). The organs typically affected are the liver and spleen. While worry and anxiety can cause disturbances of the Spleen and can also affect digestion, causing constipation, low appetite, and sometimes chronic diarrhea. Fear [...]

In the 12 dimensions of wellness, there are energy inputs, outputs and a central core. The foundation is self love and self responsibility. We intake our energy through the breath, the senses, and food. We exert energy through feeling, thoughts, movement, communication, work, play, relationships, and spiritual connection. When looked at as a whole we call these integrated dimensions they form a wheel in [...]

It is also important to know that while words constitute only 10% of our total communication, they are very important in conveying your true feelings. In previous articles we have talked about internal dialogues and our thinking process. That is communication with ourselves, of course what we tell ourselves is important to our health, however what is just as important is our relationships with others. Here are some questions to ask yourself about your communication with others, and how it may directly or indirectly affect your state of your relationships. Are you being truthful and compassionate in your communication with others? At first, you might say to yourself, “yes, I’m pretty honest most of the time (or all of the time)”, but dig deeper and ask these follow up questions: “Do I say yes when I mean no?” “Do I say I’m fine, when I really am not?”(for example when talking to close friends or [...]

It even may be the loss of a dream or fantasy. In either of these cases we go through this process called grief. Many people because of society pressures or even family or self-imposed pressures mask or hide our grief to appear “strong”. The truth is that this is natural process and everyone experiences grief in their own way. Before I get into the different ways people process grief, let me share with the the stages that people can go through during this grieving process. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross Model of Grief Elizabeth Kubler Ross was an awared winning psychologist who outlined these 5 stages of grief in her book ” On Death and Dying”. These stages are not only applicable to death, but also to catastrophes, diagnosis of illness (especially terminal), and any other major traumatic change of event of a person’s life. In addition, these stages don’t necessarily happen in the order listed below. The first stage is Denial – This is the “I feel fine” or ”This can’t be happening, not to me” phase. [...]

First let’s talk about the first three (elimination is a whole blog in itself if you could believe it….it’s coming). The three simplest activities that keep us balanced if done proportionately and properly are the three things that we seem to take for granted…especially the breathing. We breathe automatically, because our brain is designed to force us to breathe to keep our bodies functioning properly; to keep oxygen flowing to the brain and tissues. However, we don’t always recognize the value of breathing consciously instead of unconsciously. Take for instance you are in the middle of your crazy day, running from one meeting to the next (or in my case one patient to the next). Taking 1 minute (that’s right 60 seconds) to STOP, close your eyes, and take several deep breaths, can be just the shot of tranquility you need re-focus and get through the next few hours (try it right now…pause and [...]

What I often tell my patients is that the most important thing is not to stop aging but truly to age gracefully and have the best quality of life possible in that aging process. What does that mean? It means being able to enjoy life to the fullest mind, body, and spirit. It means that some things you were doing at 20 you will not be doing at 50, it also means that some things you were doing at 20 you will be doing even better! The key is embracing yourself in each stage of life. So what are the things that keep vitality in your life during the aging process? To start, making sure you have the very basics in life: Oxygen, Sleep, Water, Sensory Awareness, Physical Activity, Fun, Satisfying work, and Healthy Nutrition. Beyond basics other things such as Emotional Awareness (and healthy emotional expression), Healthy Outlets for Stress, Companionship (platonic and romantic), Passion or purpose in life, and [...]

But the information superhighway known as the world wide web has since changed all of that! Now we have webMD, Medscape, and many other medically related and diagnosis information sites out there that allow the consumer to educate themselves about their health and their condition. So, the doctor patient relationship has changed and continues to evolve. It is important to know that even with the abundance of information out there on health and wellness, the doctor patient relationship is still a sacred thing, as when you go to the doctor you are trusting them with your health and sometimes with some very personal things. There are still some very “old school” docs out there that believe that “what the doctor says goes”. I have a different opinion.
