Studies have shown that men who eat more than 10 servings per week have 35 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer. It was originally thought that lycopene, an antioxidant carotenoid component of tomatoes, watermelons and grapefruit that gives them their color, is what carries the cancer-fighting property. High levels are not only associated with low prostate specific antigen levels, but are also thought to also lower the cancer risk for stomach, lung and breast cancer. Now it is known that lycopene is only one of the major components in tomatoes that carry cancer fighting properties, and it is recommended to consume the actual tomato rather than supplementing with only the lycopene. A University of Illinois study found that two-and-a-half cups of fresh tomatoes, one cup of tomato sauce, or one-half cup of tomato paste daily is sufficient to get the cancer fighting benefit. Cooked preparations make the anti-cancer components in tomatoes more bio-available (more easily absorbed). As a bonus, it was found in that study that adding two-and-a-half cups of raw broccoli [...]

I was looking for a scrumptious summer recipe and I finally found one. I got this off of www.EatingWell.com website and it definitely looks like something both the meat eater and the vegetarian can enjoy. Remember if you don’t eat meat, just use tofu or Seitan (I prefer the latter). Enjoy! Ingredients 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon canola oil, divided 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 16- to 18-ounce tube prepared plain polenta 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, trimmed (or one pack of Seitan or other protein substitute) 2 nectarines, halved and pitted 1 pint blackberries, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon lime juice Hot sauce, to taste Preparation Preheat grill to medium-high. Combine 1 tablespoon oil, cumin, 3/4 teaspoon salt and pepper in a small bowl. Rub 1 teaspoon of the mixture all over polenta. Rub the rest into both sides of chicken. First let’s talk about the first three (elimination is a whole blog in itself if you could believe it….it’s coming). The three simplest activities that keep us balanced if done proportionately and properly are the three things that we seem to take for granted…especially the breathing. We breathe automatically, because our brain is designed to force us to breathe to keep our bodies functioning properly; to keep oxygen flowing to the brain and tissues. However, we don’t always recognize the value of breathing consciously instead of unconsciously. Take for instance you are in the middle of your crazy day, running from one meeting to the next (or in my case one patient to the next). Taking 1 minute (that’s right 60 seconds) to STOP, close your eyes, and take several deep breaths, can be just the shot of tranquility you need re-focus and get through the next few hours (try it right now…pause and [...]

What I often tell my patients is that the most important thing is not to stop aging but truly to age gracefully and have the best quality of life possible in that aging process. What does that mean? It means being able to enjoy life to the fullest mind, body, and spirit. It means that some things you were doing at 20 you will not be doing at 50, it also means that some things you were doing at 20 you will be doing even better! The key is embracing yourself in each stage of life. So what are the things that keep vitality in your life during the aging process? To start, making sure you have the very basics in life: Oxygen, Sleep, Water, Sensory Awareness, Physical Activity, Fun, Satisfying work, and Healthy Nutrition. Beyond basics other things such as Emotional Awareness (and healthy emotional expression), Healthy Outlets for Stress, Companionship (platonic and romantic), Passion or purpose in life, and [...]

Here is a healthy recipe that will have your taste buds popping! Vegetarians in the house, I wish I could give a suitable substitution suggestion for this one, but I’m afraid I’m drawing a blank on this one. But not to worry, I’ve got something special coming up for you next week on the “burger/pattie” front! Healthy fact: Turkey contains Tryptophan which is closely related to the Seratonin in our brains that can help relax us and even make us feel a little sleepy. The Tryptophan in Seratonin can also give off good feelings. Enjoy! TURKEY TERIYAKI BURGERS 1 package turkey meat 1 egg 1 cup teriyaki 1 cup bread crumbs (any flavor) Put teriyaki in large bowl. Slowly add bread crumbs and mix. You don’t need to use the entire cup of bread crumbs. Mix teriyaki and crumbs very well until a brownish moist bread crumb pile results. Add turkey meat and egg to the large bowl. Mix well. Use a mayo lid or pancake molder to form the perfect shaped burger. Put the burgers on a grill at [...]

When all of this initially started (speaking of a public option and such) I had some averse feelings to what appeared to be coming down the pipeline. But in looking at the summary of the new Health Care Bill (let me emphasize, looking at the Summary of the Bill), I’m pleasantly surprised at what I see at first glance. It seems that rather than creating an entirely new government entity (public option), President Obama is focusing heavily on Health Insurance Reform. Some of the changes will begin as early as September of 2010, but most of the major changes will begin in 2014. Here are a few of the highlights of the Bill.
