In the 12 dimensions of wellness, there are energy inputs, outputs and a central core. The foundation is self love and self responsibility. We intake our energy through the breath, the senses, and food. We exert energy through feeling, thoughts, movement, communication, work, play, relationships, and spiritual connection. When looked at as a whole we call these integrated dimensions they form a wheel in [...]

It is also important to know that while words constitute only 10% of our total communication, they are very important in conveying your true feelings. In previous articles we have talked about internal dialogues and our thinking process. That is communication with ourselves, of course what we tell ourselves is important to our health, however what is just as important is our relationships with others. Here are some questions to ask yourself about your communication with others, and how it may directly or indirectly affect your state of your relationships. Are you being truthful and compassionate in your communication with others? At first, you might say to yourself, “yes, I’m pretty honest most of the time (or all of the time)”, but dig deeper and ask these follow up questions: “Do I say yes when I mean no?” “Do I say I’m fine, when I really am not?”(for example when talking to close friends or [...]

Because we become comfortable with each other, we lose the loving way in which we attempt to make a meaningful connection with our partner. In addition, we can take for granted the things our partners may do to connect with us thereby missing the opportunity to deepen or even experience a close moment. Being aware of others’ attempt to make a meaningful connection and responding is another way to foster closeness in an intimate relationship. Dr. Gottman opened what has been identified as “The Love Lab” at the University of Washington in 1990 to study numerous couples and looking at intimacy between them. While he thought initially that self-disclosure was the key to intimacy, he found in his studies differently. In studying the couples he found that it was the simple daily interactions that most don’t even think about that promote intimacy. Examples range from direct request for some quality time to the slightest glance or touch. These he termed “bids for connection”. He also found that there were three [...]

Studies have shown that men who eat more than 10 servings per week have 35 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer. It was originally thought that lycopene, an antioxidant carotenoid component of tomatoes, watermelons and grapefruit that gives them their color, is what carries the cancer-fighting property. High levels are not only associated with low prostate specific antigen levels, but are also thought to also lower the cancer risk for stomach, lung and breast cancer. Now it is known that lycopene is only one of the major components in tomatoes that carry cancer fighting properties, and it is recommended to consume the actual tomato rather than supplementing with only the lycopene. A University of Illinois study found that two-and-a-half cups of fresh tomatoes, one cup of tomato sauce, or one-half cup of tomato paste daily is sufficient to get the cancer fighting benefit. Cooked preparations make the anti-cancer components in tomatoes more bio-available (more easily absorbed). As a bonus, it was found in that study that adding two-and-a-half cups of raw broccoli [...]

What I often tell my patients is that the most important thing is not to stop aging but truly to age gracefully and have the best quality of life possible in that aging process. What does that mean? It means being able to enjoy life to the fullest mind, body, and spirit. It means that some things you were doing at 20 you will not be doing at 50, it also means that some things you were doing at 20 you will be doing even better! The key is embracing yourself in each stage of life. So what are the things that keep vitality in your life during the aging process? To start, making sure you have the very basics in life: Oxygen, Sleep, Water, Sensory Awareness, Physical Activity, Fun, Satisfying work, and Healthy Nutrition. Beyond basics other things such as Emotional Awareness (and healthy emotional expression), Healthy Outlets for Stress, Companionship (platonic and romantic), Passion or purpose in life, and [...]
